town hall meeting - Jefferson Davis reasoning for pro slavery

My name is Jefferson Davis, and my politics consisted of many important roles and responsibilities. I served as the first and only President of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865. This was a position that brought me into the middle of one of the most controversial time  periods in all of  American history. Before  the American Civil War, I represented Mississippi in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives. As well as, I held the very big role of  the United States Secretary of War from 1853 to 1857,  which contributed to the nation's administration and defense.

Throughout my life, I i was very outspoken and passionate about my opinion about slavery., I considered slavery fair and extremely necessary for society to function as best as possible. In my opinion, slavery played a very big role in keeping the most organized and beneficial social order possible. I Thought of it as an essential element of society's hierarchy, as there were several classes that were anticipated to fulfill certain roles. I believed that some people were born to work in manual labor, while others were destined to be leaders.

One of my most controversial justifications for slavery was my strong  belief that white people were superior to African Americans. I argued that slavery was not only fair, but it was also  extremely justifiable because I considered white people to be very superior and more deserving of advantages over African Americans.

Another aspect of my pro-slavery stance was that i saw countless economic benefitsthrough slavery, especially in the South where cash crops like tobacco, rice, and cotton were. I believed that Southern agriculture only worked if there was a reliable and strong workforce, which slavery always was able to provide. In my opinion slavery played a very important role in the economy in  the south in countless ways.

While my pro-slavery views seem deeply troubling and inhumane to some, I was always sure  to treat my own slaves with fairness and respect. I was always sure to treat them like Humans. I believed that compassion and respect always made my slaves more productive. Therefore, I  always let my slaves earn money on their own. I even allowed them to start their own businesses to make their own money if they were capable. I always addressed my slaves by their names instead of using derogatory nicknames, like many slaveholders did. I even was sure to make sure that  their physical well-being was as good as possible. I did this by providing medical care and even at times, dental examinations for them. I even have funded some of my slaves' weddings.

Overall, My opinion and actions on slavery may be unsettling and different from others, however my opinion is very strong and I have been sure to treat my slaves with humanity.
